App Settings & Accessibility

Updated June 2026

Everything on this page lives under Settings in the mobile app. Settings apply to the device you change them on — they are not synced between devices, so a shared exam-room tablet and your personal phone can be configured differently.

Language

Sets your default language — the one you speak as the provider. It pre-fills the provider side of every new session so you are not choosing it before each visit.

The patient language is still chosen per session, since it changes with every patient. MediMic supports roughly 55 languages and dialects.

Audio & Voice

Voice Engine

Choose how translations are spoken aloud:

Option Behaviour Trade-off
Native Device Uses the built-in text-to-speech voices already on the phone or tablet Works offline, no extra data, more robotic
AI Voices Natural-sounding cloud voices Noticeably more human, higher data use

On a clinic tablet running over Wi-Fi, AI Voices are usually worth it. On cellular in the field, Native Device is the lighter choice.

Voice Gender

Selects the gender of the AI voice. This has no effect on native device text-to-speech — the device's own voices are controlled in your phone's system settings, not in MediMic.

Playback Speed

Controls how fast translations are read back. Slower playback helps with older patients, patients with hearing difficulty, and dense clinical instructions such as discharge or medication directions.

Auto-play Translations

On by default. Each translation is spoken aloud as soon as it is ready.

Turn it off when you want to read translations silently — a shared ward, a sleeping patient in the room, or any setting where audio would carry to people who should not hear it.

Haptic on Turn

A short vibration when the conversation turn changes. Useful in noisy rooms where you might otherwise miss that the other party has finished and it is your turn to speak.

Notifications

Setting What it controls
All notifications Master switch. Turning this off silences everything below it.
Flagged turn needs review Alerts you when a turn is marked for QA review
Product emails Occasional emails about new features. Purely optional — turning this off never affects clinical or security alerts.

Clinical Defaults

These two settings change how MediMic behaves during every session, and they are the ones worth deliberately configuring before clinical use.

Bilingual View

Shows both the original speech and its translation on screen together, rather than the translation alone.

Turn this on when you want a visible record of what was actually said in each language as the conversation happens — useful for documentation, for teaching settings, and for any provider with partial proficiency in the patient's language who wants to sanity-check the interpretation live.

Auto-flag Unclear Speech

On by default. Marks any turn the speech recogniser was unsure it heard correctly, so you can re-check it.

Flagged turns are marked live, during the conversation — an amber ! LOW CONF badge and amber outline on the turn, in both Shared Device and Two-Device mode — and stay marked in the transcript afterwards, where you can filter to them. See Transcripts & Session Records.

Recognition accuracy drops predictably with background noise, overlapping speakers, strong accents, and specialist clinical vocabulary. Flagging surfaces those moments while the patient is still in front of you, which is when a misunderstanding is cheapest to fix.

Read the flag precisely. It means "we may have misheard the words" — not "this was mistranslated". The score comes from the speech-to-text stage. Nothing in MediMic scores the quality of the translation itself.

Just as importantly: an unflagged turn is not a verified turn. Absence of a badge is not a correctness guarantee, and turns the recogniser could not score at all are left unmarked rather than flagged. Treat flags as prompts to double-check, never as a substitute for confirming understanding with the patient.

Leave this on. It does not interrupt the conversation or slow anything down.

Privacy & Security

Stay Signed In

Keeps your account active between sessions so you are not re-authenticating in front of a patient.

Leave it on for a personal device. Consider turning it off for a device that moves between staff or leaves a controlled area.

Exit App After

An inactivity timeout. After the chosen period with no interaction, the app closes itself.

On a shared clinical device this is a meaningful safeguard: it limits how long an unattended, unlocked tablet sits on a transcript. Set it as short as your workflow tolerates.

Erase App Data on This Device

Wipes local MediMic data from the device and unlinks the device from your account on the server, so the app cannot silently sign itself back in on next launch.

This is destructive. Locally stored transcripts are removed. Sessions already synced to the portal remain available there; guest-mode sessions, which never sync, are gone permanently.

Use it before handing a device to another clinician, retiring or returning hardware, or if a device has been used with the wrong account.

Accessibility

Larger Text

Increases all text in the app by 25%.

High Contrast

Boosts contrast across every screen.

Both settings apply throughout the app, including the live conversation screen — which matters, because that screen is frequently handed to the patient. An older patient reading their own translated text benefits from both far more than the provider does.

If you routinely see patients with low vision, consider leaving Larger Text and High Contrast on permanently on any device that gets handed across.
